The 2019 album by snag from Milwaukee, US was a shocker. It's not just about spewing pessimistic screams. Screamo is not just a pessimistic scream, but a beautiful, dry guitar sound and an expression that comes from a different place than the hardcore roots of the past. The sound is incredibly colorful. There were questions about where I came from, where I was going, and whether I had made a mistake somewhere. Although the theme of this album is different from the previous one, this album contains many questions and is the culmination of their activities to date.
In 2019, climate change is certainly one of the global topics, and it remains so today. Climate change is one of the global topics in 2019, and it still is. Climate change is a kind of anxiety about the future, but the anxiety expressed in this work is closer to that of death. Death in the Corona disaster, loneliness, economic problems, and many other issues that had been kept under wraps were brought to light. However, we also learned that we can lend a hand to each other, help each other, and cooperate with others in the community to have a bright hope for the future. This learning may have brought about a great change in the band. With intuitive playing, shouting, and disturbing use of sound, the songs change the scenery one after another within a single song, leading us to a different place of light from the previous works. The collaboration with violin, cello, and trumpet, which could be considered forbidden, is also linked to their expression of leading the future to a brighter place by working together, and the ensemble with the dissonant snag players is exquisite. The history of Screamo/Skramz music is rooted in the context of punk hardcore, but it began in a place where it was ostracized and disregarded by the scene. And that's why there are alternative ideas, values, and styles that can be expressed. This is a work that should be listened to by all the listeners who support Screamo/Skramz today. There is something clumsy but sincere and passionate in snag's expression that makes me think so.

USミルウォーキーから登場したsnagの2019年作は衝撃的だった。"milwaukee river skramz about climate anxiety."、つまり気候変動に向き合ったSkramz作品であり、全てを燃やし無に帰すためのマッチと枯葉入りという仕様まで含めたコンセプトも見事だった。Screamoを、悲観的な叫びをぶちまけるだけの音楽としてではなく、乾いた美しいギターの音色とこれまでのハードコアルーツとは別のところから湧き上がってきた表現として鳴らす。そのサウンドはとてつもなくカラフルだ。そして自分がどこから来てどこへ向かうのか、どこかで間違ってしまっているんじゃないのかという問いがあった。前作とテーマは違えど、本作は多くの問いを内包した作品であり、彼らのこれまでの活動の集大成でもある。
2019年の時点で、確かに気候変動は世界的なトピックの1つであり、それは現在も変わらない。だが2020年は、そして2021年も我々にとってはそれ以上に身近な場所にある多くの困難と向き合わなくてはならない年でもあった。snagの表現には「不安」がつきまとう。気候変動も未来への不安の一種と言えるが、本作で表現される不安は、より「死」というものに近づいている。コロナ禍における死、孤独、経済問題、それまで蓋をさせられていた多くの問題が浮き彫りとなった。しかしコミュニティの仲間で手を貸し合い、助け合うこと、協力し合うことで未来に明るい希望を託すことが出来ることもまた学びであった。この学びがバンドに大きな変化をもたらしているのかもしれない。直感的な演奏、叫び、不穏な音使いを重ねながらも、楽曲は1曲の中でも次々を景色を変えていき、これまでの作品と異なる光の射す場所へと導いてゆく。禁じ手ともいえるバイオリン、チェロ、トランペットといった楽器隊とのコラボレーションもまた、協力し合うことで未来を明るい場所へと導いてゆくという彼らの表現と連動しており、不協和音を奏でるsnagの演奏隊とのアンサンブルが絶妙だ。Screamo/Skramzという音楽の歴史は、パンクハードコアの文脈に根ざしながらもシーンから爪弾きにされ見向きもされない場所から始まっている。そして、だからこそ表現できるオルタナティブな思想、価値観、流儀がある。いま現在のScreamo/Skramzをサポートする全てのリスナーに聴いてほしい作品です。そう思うくらい、snagの表現には不器用だが真摯で熱い何かがある。
